The purpose of this manual is to give instructions on how to correctly set up the software functionality of the LIGHTNING by Humphree system.

2.1 Intended Product Usage
LIGHTNING by Humphree is a stabilization system designed for motorboats with the following specifications: • Length of 20-45 feet
• Speed of 10-50 knots
The system must not be used for purposes other than the intended usage.
2.2 Intended Audience
This manual is aimed at the installer of the LIGHTNING by Humphree system, including ship-builders, and other authorized workshops with qualified personnel. The following installation instructions are intended for professionals only.

- Speed
Shows the speed at which the boat is traveling in Knots.
-- Indicates no speed signal available. In chapter 3.3 you can read how to simulate GPS speed
- Information Icon Panel
Shows icons that inform the user that certain features are enabled. Such as Wi-fi, remote support or recordings.
- Alarm Icon
Is only visible when there is an active system alarm.
Tap and hold to be redirected to the alarm screen to know more about any issue causing the alarm.

Tap the standby button to activate standby mode (3a). Slide the button all the way to the enter standby (3b). Touch the screen to wake up. If this is grayed out, your control panel is a revision

- Auto Trim Button
Tap to toggle the Auto Trim function on or off.

- Pitch Control Button
Tap to toggle the Pitch Control function on or off.
For more information on how to set up Pitch & Roll, see Section 7.4 Enable Pitch Control.
- List & Roll Control Button
If you have Auto List and Roll Stabilization licensed (Dynamic or Dynamic plus packages), this button will say “List & Roll control” and a tap will toggle Auto List and Roll stabilization on or off.
If you only have Auto List licensed (Comfort or Comfort Plus packages),this button will say “Auto List” and a tap will toggle Auto List on or off.

4. SYSTEM LAUNCH
To start the Lightning Control Panel (LCP), turn on the power to the system.
A Wi-Fi connection with internet is required for the following:
- To Install the latest software update.
- To automatically download licenses for a function package and/ or underwater light activation
- To Install a preset

The system will help you through important steps throughout the setup, if you follow the red notification badges, you will quickly be done with all checklist points with a red badge on the list on the previous page.
4.1 Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

TO CONNECT TO A WI-FI NETWORK, Do the following:
- Enable Wi-Fi
- In WI-FI settings screen, tap SELECT NETWORK.
- Choose one of the Wi-Fi network listed on the screen.
FOR PASSWORD PROTECTED WI-FI NETWORKS, input the password and make sure that Control Panel remains connected to the Wi-Fi.
NOTE!
The password must have a minimum of 8 characters for the LCP to send a connection request to the network.
4.2 Download and install Software Update
The Lightning Control System automatically searches for the latest software version when connected to the Internet. If a new software version is available, a popup will appear on the controls page. You can also manually search for updates

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL, press the download button in the pop-up on the screen. The software version will download in the background. Go to them main screen.

TO INSTALL SOFTWARE UPDATE, press the update button in the pop-up on the screen. A second pop-up will appear to make sure you keep the power on during the entire update.

DURING INSTALLATION, the system will restart and update the different units one by one. When the software update is completed the system will display a success message.
MANUALLY CONTROL SOFTWARE, press ADVANCED > SOFTWARE UPDATE and manually search for the latest software. Here you can also follow the download percentage and other information.
4.3 Sync and check function package license
The Lightning Control System automatically downloads the latest function package license when connected to the Internet. You can sync again, and see what functions you have licensed from the license menu. Swipe down to see the status of all functions available for your system.
PRESETS
4.4 Download and install settings preset
Install the perfect settings for every boat model in a range with presets. Make the perfect setup once, and then you won’t have to do it again.
This is a new feature that requires that the Humphree partner or OEM has specifically assigned a boat model with a setting preset in the Humphree Portal. You can also hide away menus with perfect settings. To check if there is a preset available and install it, follow these steps. If you are a partner or OEM and want to know more about how to create presets for your model range, contact you Humphree Sales representative.
1 NAVIGATE TO PRESETS, by pressing SETTINGS > ADVANCED > PRESETS

CHECK FOR PRESETS, by pressing the button. If a preset is available, make sure that the preset name, boat model and make matches what you expect in the boat you are installing.
3 INSTALL PRESET. A progress bar will appear and presets will be applied.

PRESET IS INSTALLED, Now many settings are already in place and the setup will be easier to finish. Function setup with a preset does not need additional setup. Some menus might now also be hidden that already contain perfect settings.

SETTINGS BACKUP, You can backup all the settings to the cloud by pressing settings backup in the advanced menu. This is perfect to do after a sea trial.
5. SET UP THE INTERCEPTORS
5. SET UP THE INTERCEPTORS
The instructions in this section verify that the interceptors are installed correctly and that they work.
5.1 CALIBRATE INTERCEPTORS
TO OPEN THE INTERCEPTOR SETUP SCREEN, do the following:

START INTERCEPTOR CALIBRATION by tapping the CALIBRATE SERVOS button. • If speed source is unknown, but you are sure that the boat is at standstill, select YES when prompted to CONFIRM CALIBRATION
NOTE!
Calibrate the Lightning Interceptors first, before setup of any other Lightning equipment.
To troubleshoot issues, go to the Q&A or Diagnostic Trouble Codes page of the Humphree Lightning website for further assistance.
SYSTEM SETUP > INTERCEPTOR SETUP > INTERCEPTOR OFFSET
- The interceptor offset sets the start of the interceptor working range. When the interceptors have been mounted above the hull transom the offset calibration is mandatory, like the case with angled transoms.
- Using plus and minus keys for port and starboard interceptor, adjust the blades individually to the position where they are aligned with the bottom of the hull.
6. SET UP THE LIGHTNING SYSTEM
The instructions in this section show how to calibrate the Control Unit sensor inputs from the boat. This allows the Lightning automatic functions to work.
Perform all instructions shown in the following subsections before attempting to configure or use any of the auto functions.
To open the SYSTEM SETUP screen, do the following: MENU > SETTINGS > SYSTEM SETUP
The following instructions ensure that the zero position of the LCU sensor matches the neutral position of the boat. To set up the sensor do the following:
- Select LCU Orientation
- Input the LCU Heading Angle, if the LCU is mounted at an angle
- Set the Trim Angle to zero
- Set the List angle to zero
To open the SENSOR SETUP screen, do the following:

6.1.1 SELECT THE LCU ORIENTATION

CHECK THE LCU POSITION in the boat.

SELECT THE MATCHING LCU POSITION in the LCU ORIENTATION screen of the Control Panel:
SENSOR SETUP > LCU ORIENTATION • Use the PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons to scroll through and choose among the 20 LCU Orientation options.
NOTE!
Make sure to select the correct LCU Orientation!
Incorrect selection of LCU orientation leads to incorrect behavior of the Lightning system and a poor boating experience.
6.1.2 ADJUST THE LCU HEADING ANGLE

MEASURE THE ANGLE OF THE LCU:
IF the LCU is mounted at an angle so that it is not facing the center line of the hull, e.g. the transom is not 90° to the center line.
Measure the angle between the LCU’s heading line and the center line. This example has a heading angle that is towards starboard.
NOTE!
Headings are based on your selected orientation. You can see the center line axis on the orange arrow indicated in the illustrations seen in step 6.1.1 Select LCU orientation.

INPUT THE LCU ANGLE by into the LCU HEADING ANGLE screen of the LCP:
SENSOR SETUP > LCU HEADING ANGLE
• Use the PORT and STARBOARD buttons to adjust the angle.
6.1.3 CALIBRATE THE TRIM AND LIST ANGLES

MAKE SURE THE BOAT IS DOCKED and positioned as follows:
- Speed: 0 kn
- List Angle: 00
- Trim Angle: 00
- Loaded on an even keel

If the boat is even, you can press the button to quickly set angles. You can skip step 3 and 4.
- FINE TUNE THE TRIM ANGLE OR SET TO ZERO:
• SENSOR SETUP > ANGLE CALIBRATION > TRIM ANGLESelect the SET ZERO button
- FINE TUNE THE LIST ANGLE OR SET TO ZERO:
• SENSOR SETUP > ANGLE CALIBRATION > LIST ANGLESelect the SET ZERO button
6.2 SET UP THE RUDDER

The following instructions ensure that the LCU sensor interprets the steering of the boat correctly. To open the RUDDER calibration
SYSTEM SETUP > RUDDER > CALIBRATION
Follow the on-screen guide to automatically calibrate rudder signal to PORT, STARBOARD and CENTER.
You can also manually calibrate the rudder in the rudder menu.
6.3 SET UP THE SPEED SOURCE
A speed source is required for the use of the automatic functions. The system automatically selects the best speed source on the NMEA2000 network. You will get an alarm if there is no speed source available. Configurable options:
- Automatic or Manual GPS Selection
- Water Speed: the system uses the primary speed source and falls back to GPS signal as a backup, if the sensors drop out.
- Allow Nofix GPS: lets the system accept a GPS signal that never change state from “no fix” as a speed source.
To open GPS SELECTION screen, do the following: SYSTEM SETUP > SPEED SOURCE
> GPS SELECTION
Make sure that the NMEA 2000 cable is connected to the Control Panel before setting up the GPS connection.

6.3.1 MANUAL SELECTION
IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE GPS sources and want to select a specific, turn off AUTO SELECTION and pick one from the manual menu.
6.4 SET UP MULTI FUNCTIONAL DISPLAYS (MFD)
NOTE!
Before setting up the MFD-application, make sure the Ethernet cables are connected to the same network as you MFD. For more information see Installation Manual - Chapter 8.5: Integration installation
The system should automatically appear in your Mfd’s app drawer. Power up all devices and look for the HUMPHREE application. For Garmin press HOME > VESSEL > HUMPHREE. For Simrad and Raymarine press the app drawer icon and select the Humphree icon. If it doesn’t find the screen, try turning IP CONFIG to OFF and then AUTO again with the MFD turned on.
6.4.1 MANUAL SELECTION
If you manually need to configure the connection, go to SETTINGS > CONNECTIONS > ETHERNET and select IP CONFIG and set to manual. Configure the IP accordingly.
6.5 SET UP ISOTTA BUTTONS
This applies to ISOTTA Intelligent Steering Modules with NMEA2000 support.
You can configure actions for the system on the ISOTTA steering wheel buttons, if you have these. There are many actions, such as controlling each interceptor individually, list/trim correction (the same action as swiping on the screen), toggle automatic functions on and off, and last but not least turning on and off underwater lights.
Select one action you want for each button on the steering wheel, or select no action if you prefer to not use it. You can disable all input with the “ENABLE BUTTON ACTIONS” toggle.
7. SET UP THE LIGHTNING FUNCTIONS

With presets, you can do this setup once for all boat models in a range.

The following instructions explain how to configure the Lightning automatic functions for use. You can configure all functions regardless of current license.
To open the FUNCTION SETUP screen, do the following:
MENU > SETTINGS > FUNCTION SETUP
PRESETS

7.1 CONFIGURE AUTO TRIM
Input the following information to correctly configure the AUTO TRIM function according to the needs of the boat:
- Hump Speed
- Hump Speed Extension
- Trim Max Speed
- Max Speed Extension
To open the AUTO TRIM screen, do the following:
FUNCTION SETUP > AUTO TRIM
7.1.1 COLLECT AUTO TRIM DATA
FIND OUT THE HUMP SPEED of the boat by driving it and accelerating slowly.
- Note down the speed at which visibility is most obstructed by the bow.

ADJUST THE INTERCEPTOR BLADES while driving the boat at Hump Speed and do the following:
- Swipe anywhere on the screen to adjust the trim until visibility is unobstructed.

TO FIND OUT THE TRIM MAX SPEED of the boat, accelerate to the maximum boat speed.

GET THE TRIM MAX SPEED, by lowering the speed from maximum until the bow starts to rise:
• Note down the speed at which the bow starts to rise.
NOTE!
If your boat cannot reach planning speed, set the Trim Max Speed to the boats max speed. Set the Max Speed Extension to the value where the bow is at an optimal angle.
- IF YOUR BOAT NEEDS INTERCEPTORS AT MAX SPEED adjust the interceptor
blades, while the boat is going at Trim Max Speed and do the following:
HOME SCREEN > MANUAL CONTROLS • Swipe anywhere to adjust the trim until the bow stops rising.
- NOTE THE MAX SPEED BLADE EXTENSION percentage number, to input into the LCP later in Section 7.1.2:

7.1.2 INPUT THE AUTO TRIM DATA INTO THE CONTROL PANEL INPUT THE HUMP SPEED into the HUMP SPEED SCREEN of the LCP:
AUTO TRIM > HUMP SPEED
- Use the + and - buttons to input the correct value.

INPUT THE HUMP SPEED EXTENSION percentage into the LCP:
AUTO TRIM > HUMP SPEED EXTENSION
- Use the + and - buttons to input the correct value.

7.2 TUNE AUTO LIST FUNCTION
NOTE!
Auto list has default settings, if you want to fine tune the function follow the recommendation on the setup basics. If you are satisfied, proceed to the next function.
AUTO LIST SETUP BASICS
Adjust Sensitivity - Boat reacts to fast or to slow to level out. System fights Auto Pilot
Activation and Deactivation Speed - Control activation of function at lower speeds
Turn Detect and Turn Exit Limit - System interferes with turns, heel angle is not natural. Function deactivates too late or activates too late after turning.
True Turn Compensation - Stop boat from heeling outwards in weak turns.
7.2.1 ADJUST THE LIST SENSITIVITY
Sensitivity regulates the Auto List compensation reaction time. Increase the list sensitivity if the list compensation feels slow when the boat experiences a new load condition or wind angle.
To adjust Sensitivity, do the following:
AUTO LIST can interfere with the auto-pilot’s course keeping. It is important to make the function and the boat’s autopilot work together. If the Auto Pilot have a self tuning feature, always perform the self tuning with all Humphree functions properly setup and activated and at proper speed for the function to be engaged.
High values of AUTO LIST SENSITIVITY can interfere with the course keeping. To solve issues that which cannot be solved by autopilot calibration, reduce the Auto List Sensitivities until the autopilot starts working again.
7.2.2 SET THE LIST ACTIVATION AND DEACTIVATION SPEED
The Activation Speed is the speed at which the Auto List function starts to automatically activates list compensation.
The Deactivation Speed is the speed at which the Auto List function deactivates.
To adjust the Activation Speed or the Deactivation Speed, do one the following:
AUTO LIST > ACTIVATION SPEED
AUTO LIST > DEACTIVATION SPEED
NOTE!
Humphree does not recommend changing the default values for the Activation and Deactivation Speeds, unless it is done by an experienced technician.
NOTE!
Always set the Deactivation Speed to 1 or 2 knots below the Activation Speed!
7.2.3 SET THE TURN DETECT AND TURN EXIT LIMITS
Turn detect releases Auto List in a sharp turn, allowing the boat to naturally heel inwards. The heeling angle of the boat is then effectively controlled by the Coordinated Turn function (if included)
Turn Exit Limit is used to sense when the boat is no longer turning.
To adjust the Turn Detect and Turn Exit Limits, do the following:
AUTO LIST > TURN DETECT LIMIT
AUTO LIST > TURN EXIT LIMIT
Default Values
7.2.4 ADJUST THE TRUE TURN COMPENSATION
Adjust the True Turn Compensation to stop the boat from leaning outwards on weak turns.
To adjust the True Turn Compensation, do the following: AUTO LIST > TRUE TURN
COMPENSATION
7.3 CONFIGURE COORDINATED TURN
Coordinated Turn automatically adjusts the heeling angle of the boat during turns to reduce the impact of side forces for people on board. This function makes the boat ride more comfortable and safer.
NOTE!
Coordinated turn has default settings, however it’s often the case that each boat and captain has preferences on turning experience. We recommend proper setup, to get the best experience.
COORDINATED TURN SETUP BASICS
Gain - How much the interceptor helps in the turn. Gain can be set to heel more inwards or outwards in the turn.
Transition speed - Transition between high and low gain to calibrate for bellow and above cruising speed.
To properly configure the COORDINATED TURN function do the following:
- Take the boat for a ride to gather the following data:
- Rudder Deadband - Decide at what percentage turn of the rudder is required to activate Coordinated Turn.
- Low and High Speed Gain - Sets the percentage of blade deployment necessary to adjust the heeling angle when the boat turns at low speeds and at high speeds. Can be negative to heel outwards.
- Transition Speed - for sensing when the Coordinated Turn function must switch from Low Speed Gain to High Speed Gain and vice versa.
- Input the collected data into the control panel.
To open the COORDINATED TURN screen, do the following:
FUNCTION SETUP > COORDINATED TURN
7.3.1 COLLECT TURNING DATA FIND THE RUDDER DEADBAND of the boat by driving it and doing test turns toward Port and Starboard to get a feel of how the boat heels and when COORDINATED TURN should activate.
- Check the Rudder Angle Indicator and note down the percentage values for both sides of the boat.

THE TRANSITION SPEED of the boat is a few knots under the cruising speed of the boat.
- Note the cruising speed of the boat and subtract a couple of knots.
IMPORTANT!
TURN OFF ALL AUTOMATIC FUNCTIONS to make it a lot easier for you to find a setting you are satisfied with.
SET THE LOW SPEED GAIN by driving close to hump speed.
As the boat turns, adjust the interceptor blades until the ride is comfortable:
- Swipe left or right anywhere on the screen to adjust interceptor blades.
Do this step for Port and Starboard turns.

SET THE HIGH SPEED GAIN by driving the boat slightly above cruising speed.
As the boat turns, adjust the interceptor blades until the ride is comfortable:
• Swipe left or right anywhere on the screen to adjust interceptor blades.
Do this step for Port and Starboard turns.

- Use the + and - buttons to input the correct value.

7.4 ENABLE AND ADJUST PITCH CONTROL
Pitch Control increase comfort on boat and reduces unwanted pitching of the boat.
To properly configure the PITCH CONTROL function, test and adjust the sensitivities on water with waves.
When a boat is facing choppy head sea the ride comfort worsens significantly due to all the bumping and pitching movements as the hull meets the waves. An experienced captain would then trim down the bow to calm down the motions and improve the comfort.
The SMART PITCH Automatic Bow Down function has a wave detection that detects this sea state and will extend the interceptors automatically to mimic what the experienced captain would have done.
NOTE!
Always try pitch control in water with waves. Pitch control has default settings, if you want to fine tune the function follow the recommendation on the setup basics. If you are satisfied, proceed to the next function.
PITCH CONTROL SETUP BASICS
Sensitivity - Boat reacts to fast or to slow
Max Bow Down Stroke - Better pitch performance at choppy head seas - Smart pitch applies to little or to much extra deployment
Bow down threshold - Make Smart pitch activate faster or less frequent.
To open the PITCH CONTROL screen, do the following:
FUNCTION SETUP > PITCH CONTROL
1 TEST THE PITCH SENSITIVITY of the boat by driving it on water with waves.
ADJUST THE PITCH SENSITIVITY in the following screen:
PITCH CONTROL > PITCH SENSITIVITY
• Use the + and - buttons to increase or decrease sensitivity values.
a warning appears!
NOTE!
Some hull shapes can behave nervously with too high sensitivity settings.
3 ADJUST THE SMART PITCH CONTROL’S BOW DOWN STROKE
Adjust the desired interceptor force for automatic bow down with MAX BOW DOWN STROKE.

ADJUST THE SMART PITCH CONTROL’S BOW DOWN THRESHOLD
Increase the value of BOW DOWN THRESHOLD if it is considered that the function reacts in too calm conditions and vice versa.
7.5 ENABLE AND ADJUST ROLL CONTROL
Roll Control increase comfort on boat and reduces unwanted rolling of the boat, leading to a true stabilized experience.

NOTE!
ROLL CONTROL can interfere with the auto pilot’s course keeping. It is important to make the stabilization and the boat’s autopilot work together. If the Auto Pilot have a self tuning feature, always perform the self tuning with all Humphree functions properly setup and activated.
High values of ROLL CONTROL SENSITIVITY can interfere with the course keeping. To solve issues that which cannot be solved by autopilot calibration, reduce the Roll Stabilization sensitivities until the autopilot starts working again.
ADJUST THE ROLL CONTROL in the following screen:
LIST & ROLL CONTROL > ROLL CONTROL
• Use the + and - buttons to increase or decrease sensitivity values.
7.6 ENABLE CLEANING
Turn on interceptor cleaning mode in the cleaning menu. The interceptors will automatically perform a cleaning sequence in the interval displayed. Cleaning mode will ensure the interceptors are clean from marine growth and increase their lifespan. In this menu you can change the cleaning function to your liking, for instance turn on intensive cleaning for environments prone to quick growth. Cleaning will not work if the system has no power.
8. CUSTOMIZE THE LCP DISPLAY

The Lightning Control Panel can be customized in the following ways:
- Change the display orientation to fit how the LCP is installed on the boat.
- Change the default theme to dark theme or night modes • Enable the LED lights to switch off at the lowest dimmer setting.
To make changes to the open the LCP Display go to:
MENU > SETTINGS > SYSTEM SETUP > DISPLAY
8.2 CONFIGURE KEY-SWITCH AND WAKE ON TOUCH
With the key-switch cable installed (see installation manual), you might want to disable “wake on touch” to avoid the control panel waking up by touching it.
If you have this enabled, restarting power to the control unit will also cause the screen to wake up.
You disable this setting under ADVANCED > MISCELLANEOUS > WAKE ON TOUCH
